The Black Angels are an American psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004 — one of the leading psych-revival acts of the 21st century, celebrated by AllMusic for "conjuring a dark and moody variety of psychedelia leavened with garage rock and shoegaze-styled indie rock" and credited with helping revive Texas' reputation as a center for lysergic sounds. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angel's Death Song." The band was born on May 1, 2004, when friends Christian Bland and Alex Maas — hanging out at Austin dive bar Trophy's on South Congress — heard the scheduled act had cancelled, ran home for their gear, and took the stage as a duo playing Velvet Underground covers before recruiting drummer Stephanie Bailey, keyboardist Jennifer Raines, and bassist Nate Ryan. Embracing the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Spacemen 3, and Spiritualized, their 2006 debut Passover was a clarion call for the psych-rock underground — described as "walking in the shadows cast by Spiritualized mastermind Jason Pierce." Directions to See a Ghost (2008), Phosphene Dream (2010), Indigo Meadow (2013), Death Song (2017), and Wilderness of Mirrors (2022) followed — a catalog that avoided the genre's clichés while charting a powerfully atmospheric course. Beyond music, the Black Angels launched Austin Psych Fest in 2008 — now known as Levitation Festival — the premier international celebration of psychedelic and garage rock, expanding to France in 2013. The current lineup is Alex Maas (vocals/bass), Christian Bland (guitar), Stephanie Bailey (drums), Jake Garcia (guitar), and Misti Hamrick-French.
