About Burning Spear

Burning Spear — born Winston Rodney on March 1, 1945, in Saint Ann's Bay, Saint Ann, Jamaica — is a Jamaican roots reggae singer-songwriter described by AllMusic as "part Rastafarian preacher, part Black historian — more so than any other roots artist." Born in the same parish as Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey — both profound influences — Rodney chose his stage name from Jomo Kenyatta, the Kenyan freedom fighter jailed by a colonial British government who rose to become Kenya's first president. His musical career began through a chance encounter: walking through the hills of St. Ann, he ran into Bob Marley, who encouraged him to visit Coxsone Dodd's Studio One in Kingston, where Rodney recorded debut single "Door Peep" in 1969 — one of the first deeply Rastafarian recordings in Jamaican music history. Self-titled debut album (1973, Studio One) and Rocking Time (1974) established his foundation; Marcus Garvey (1975, Island Records) — recorded with the legendary Black Disciples band and featuring "Slavery Days" — was a masterwork of dread roots reggae and one of the most celebrated reggae albums ever recorded, followed by Garvey's Ghost (1976), Man in the Hills (1976), and Social Living (1978). Burning Spear toured with Talking Heads and the Clash, headlined Reggae Sunsplash, and has released over twenty-five albums across six decades — nine earning Grammy nominations — with Calling Rastafari (1999) winning the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. A recipient of the Order of Distinction from the Government of Jamaica, the Nelson Mandela Award (1991), and NAIRD Indie Awards, he founded Burning Music Productions with his wife Sonia Rodney and remains one of the greatest living voices in roots reggae.
