Carnifex is an American deathcore band from San Diego County, California — one of the most enduring and beloved acts in the history of deathcore, known for a bone-crushing blend of death metal technicality, black metal atmosphere, and hardcore brutality across two decades and nine studio albums. The band's name derives from the Latin word for "executioner." Founded in December 2005 in Fallbrook, California, by vocalist Scott Ian Lewis, drummer Shawn Cameron, and guitarist Cory Arford, Carnifex debuted with a self-titled EP (May 2006, Enclave Records) and Love Lies in Ashes (March 2007), before releasing debut full-length Dead in My Arms (July 12, 2007, This City Is Burning Records, produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris). Signing to Victory Records, The Diseased and the Poisoned (June 2008) reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart; Hell Chose Me (2010), Until I Feel Nothing (2011), and Die Without Hope (2014) followed. After a hiatus from October 2012 through June 2013, Carnifex returned and signed to Nuclear Blast, releasing Slow Death (August 5, 2016, produced by Jason Suecof) — incorporating black metal and symphonic elements — before touring Summer Slaughter with Cannibal Corpse. World War X (2019) and Graveside Confessions (2021) continued their evolution; ninth album Necromanteum (October 6, 2023, Nuclear Blast) — produced by Suecof, Lewis, and Cameron and featuring the first contributions of lead guitarist Neal Tiemann — was acclaimed as a career best. The current lineup of Lewis, Cameron, Cory Arford, Fred Calderon, and Neal Tiemann is now signed to Sumerian Records.
