About Cimarron

Cimarrón are a Colombian band from Bogotá who have carried joropo, the festive dance music of the Orinoco plains shared by Colombia and Venezuela, to stages in more than 40 countries. Founded in 2000 by singer Ana Veydó and harpist Carlos "Cuco" Rojas, the group built its own sound from traditional joropo and the Indigenous and African elements running through it, using arpa llanera, cuatro, bandola, maracas and layered percussion alongside deer-skull whistles from the Orinoco and the thunderous zapateo stomp dance. Their 2004 album Sí, soy llanero drew a Grammy nomination and 2019's Orinoco a Latin Grammy nomination, and they have won Best Group at the UK's Songlines Music Awards. Veydó has led the band since Rojas's death.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cimarron

When is Cimarron's next tour?

They tour internationally in concentrated runs rather than continuously, having spent three years taking their Gira Mundial del Joropo through Japan, Europe and the United States. American dates have taken them to performing arts centres and folk festivals including the North Carolina Folk Festival, the Jefferson Center in Virginia and Utah Presents in Salt Lake City, and they have completed five UK tours alongside the Welsh harpist Catrin Finch.

What is Cimarron's new music?

"Superba," released in February 2026, broke a silence of roughly three years. Built from a traditional milking song and recorded between Colombia, Venezuela and France, it pairs the llanera harp with a cinematic melancholy and revives the quitiplás, an Afro-Venezuelan bamboo percussion instrument. In July 2026 the band released a new version of Aterciopelados' 1996 song "La Culpable" with Andrea Echeverri, thirty years after the original, and a full album has been expected to follow.

What is a Cimarron show like?

The live show is as visual as it is musical. Veydó fronts the band in vividly coloured dresses and a bull-horn headdress, with the male musicians in black, and the performance is driven by virtuoso harp playing and trance-inducing shoe stomping used as percussion. Critics regularly describe the effect as overwhelming, and the band frames the whole thing as an argument that joropo and flamenco share African roots.
