Combining the rebelliousness of the Sex Pistols and Ramones with the aggressive, kinetic energy of the Hermosa Beach surfer and skateboarder scene, the Circle Jerks debuted in 1980 with Group Sex on Frontier Records — a fourteen-track landmark of the hardcore genre whose songs ranged from 1:35 down to 27 seconds, pushing punk's velocity to new extremes. The band appeared in Penelope Spheeris's essential 1981 documentary The Decline of Western Civilization, cementing their place in the canon. Wild in the Streets (1982), Golden Shower of Hits (1983), Wonderful (1985), and VI (1987) followed across multiple lineups, with Hetson simultaneously joining Bad Religion in 1984. The current lineup consists of Morris, Hetson, bassist Zander Schloss (since 1983), and drummer Joey Castillo (since 2019). The band has broken up and reformed multiple times over the decades; after a lengthy hiatus during which Morris formed OFF! and FLAG, they reunited in 2019 and have been actively touring. During hiatuses the Circle Jerks were sidelined from the punk revival of the 1990s despite their foundational influence on a generation of bands including Green Day and the Offspring — a complicated legacy explored in the 2012 documentary My Career as a Jerk.
