About Dark Star Orchestra

Dark Star Orchestra is a Grateful Dead tribute band formed in Chicago in 1997 that built its reputation on recreating entire historical Dead concerts. Rather than assembling a greatest-hits set, the seven-piece group picks a specific show from the Dead's 30 years of touring and plays its setlist in order, matching the instruments, arrangements and vocal roles of that era, while also building original sets from the catalogue. The band has passed 3,300 performances and hosted guest appearances by six original Dead members, among them Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann, plus longtime Dead soundman Dan Healy. In 2026 they returned to the Greek Theatre in Berkeley for a two-night Rex Foundation benefit billed as a tribute to Bob Weir.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dark Star Orchestra

When is Dark Star Orchestra's next tour?

The band tours close to year-round in seasonal legs rather than one annual run. The 2026 calendar opened with Jam In The Sand XIII in Jamaica in January and a thirteen-show western winter tour that began in Phoenix on January 29 and worked through California, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. Later dates include their own Dark Star Jubilee festival at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio over Memorial Day weekend, a late-autumn run through November and December, and a New Year's celebration carrying into January 2027.

Who is in Dark Star Orchestra?

The current lineup is Jeff Mattson on lead guitar in the Jerry Garcia role, Rob Eaton on rhythm guitar as Bob Weir, Rob Barraco on keyboards, Skip Vangelas on bass, Rob Koritz and Dino English on the double drum kit, and Lisa Mackey on vocals. Mattson replaced founding guitarist John Kadlecik in 2009 after Kadlecik joined Furthur with Weir and Lesh.

What can fans expect at a Dark Star Orchestra show?

Most nights follow the structure of an actual Grateful Dead concert, with two sets and a drums-and-space passage, played on era-appropriate gear. The band tends not to publicise which show is being recreated beforehand, so identifying the date and venue is part of the experience for longtime fans. Some nights instead feature an original set drawn from across the Dead's catalogue.
