The Derek Trucks Band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1994 by slide guitarist Derek Trucks, then fifteen, beginning with bassist Todd Smallie. The nephew of Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks, Derek was steeped in Southern blues rock, but the group's 1997 debut on Landslide Records drew as much from Hindustani classical music and John Coltrane. The lineup settled around Smallie, drummer Yonrico Scott, keyboardist and flautist Kofi Burbridge, percussionist Count M'Butu and vocalist Mike Mattison, and the band hit its stride with 2002's Joyful Noise. Its sixth and final studio album, Already Free, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album, and the group took Band of the Year at the Blues Music Awards in 2011.
