Hail the Sun is an American progressive post-hardcore band from Chico, California, formed in 2009 — celebrated for a lethal blend of blastbeats, complex time signatures, math rock intricacy, screamo rawness, and the extraordinary vocal and drumming abilities of frontman Donovan Melero. Melero received his first drum set at age six and began singing around the same age; he met guitarist Aric Garcia in sixth grade — a friendship of over twenty years. Shane Gann (guitar) and John Stirrat (bass) complete the core lineup. Beginning with an independent debut POW! Right in the Kisser! (2010) and EP Elephantitis (2012), the band signed to Sacramento-based Blue Swan Records and released critically acclaimed sophomore album Wake (2014). After an intensive touring schedule, they signed to Equal Vision Records and released Culture Scars (June 17, 2016) — charting at number 38 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart — followed by the Secret Wars EP (2017, featuring searing single "1109") and Mental Knife (September 28, 2018), produced by Saosin's Beau Burchell. New Age Filth (2021) and Divine Inner Tension (2023) followed to critical acclaim, with seventh full-length cut. turn. fade. back. — produced by Beach Noise, known for their work on Kendrick Lamar's 2022 album — released in 2026. Melero is also a member of progressive supergroup Sianvar. The current lineup features touring and studio drummer Allen Casillas alongside the four founding members.
