About Il Trittico

Il Trittico, meaning The Triptych, is a set of three one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini, premiered together at the Metropolitan Opera on 14 December 1918. Puccini began planning a cycle of one-act works around 1904, inspired by the success of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, and originally intended each to correspond to one of the three canticles of Dante's Divine Comedy. In the end only Gianni Schicchi drew directly on the poem. He wrote Il tabarro first, then added Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi as deliberate contrasts. It was his last completed work, preceding the unfinished Turandot, and he insisted the three be performed as a single evening.

Frequently Asked Questions about Il Trittico

What are the three operas in Il Trittico?

Il tabarro is a dark drama of jealousy and murder among bargemen on the Seine in early twentieth-century Paris. Suor Angelica is a mystical tragedy scored for female voices only, following a young noblewoman forced into a convent. Gianni Schicchi is a comic farce set in medieval Florence, drawn from Dante's Inferno, and the source of the aria "O mio babbino caro."

How long is Il Trittico?

A complete performance typically runs around three hours, with each opera lasting roughly 50 minutes to an hour and two intervals in between. Because the full triptych is long and demands large forces, houses often stage only one or two of the operas instead, so check what your performance includes before buying.

Do the three operas have to be performed together?

Puccini wanted them presented as a unit, and for the first three years after the premiere they always were. He relented in 1921 and allowed them to be staged separately, which is now common. Some modern productions reorder them, as Christof Loy did in Paris by opening with Gianni Schicchi to follow Dante's sequence from Hell to Paradise.
