Kinky is a Mexican alternative rock band from Monterrey, Nuevo León — one of the most internationally celebrated acts from the Avanzada Regia movement, the boundary-pushing scene that also produced Control Machete and Plastilina Mosh. Formed in 1998 by vocalist and guitarist Gilberto Cerezo, keyboardist and programmer Ulises Lozano (also co-founder of electronic norteño group Mexican Dubwiser), and guitarist Carlos Chairez — with drummer Omar Góngora and bassist Cesar Pliego joining shortly after — the five had known each other for years through Monterrey's tightly interconnected music scene. By summer 2000 they competed at the Latin Alternative Music Conference Battle of Bands in New York City, beating ten other finalists and catching the ear of British producer Chris Allison — whose credits included Coldplay, the Beta Band, and the Wedding Present — who signed them to his Sonic 360 label. Their self-titled debut Kinky (2002), co-produced with Allison, drew critical acclaim; "Más" appeared in Nissan commercials and the NBC series Kingpin, while "A Dónde Van Los Muertos?" became a massive Latin American hit. Second album Atlas (2003) pulled back on electronics to favor a live-replicable sound, as the band had become renowned for electrifying performances spanning Colombia, France, Mexico, England, and the US. Subsequent albums include Barracuda (2007), Sueño de la Maquina (2012), and Nada Vale Más Que Tú (2017), the latter featuring collaborations with Pepe Aguilar and Adrián Dárgelos of Babasónicos. Kinky's music blends electronica, funk, alternative rock, and northern Mexican sounds, sung primarily in Spanish with some English.
