About LIU Sharks Men's Basketball

The LIU Sharks men's basketball team represents Long Island University in NCAA Division I competition as a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), based in Brooklyn, New York. The program traces its roots to the 1920s and was a national powerhouse in the 1930s and 1940s under coach Clair Bee, winning NIT titles in 1939 and 1941. Following a 2019 merger of the LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post athletic programs, the team competes as the Sharks. The program has made eight NCAA Tournament appearances in total, most recently in 2026 when, after winning both the NEC regular-season and tournament championships with a 24-win season, they faced first-seed Arizona. The NCAA Tournament record stands at 0-8. Under head coach Rod Strickland, who was named NEC Coach of the Year in 2025-26, LIU has established itself as the conference's top program.
