The hip-hop world has always been competitive, with Kendrick Lamar and Drake at the center of the storm. For years, a rivalry has brewed between these two artistic powerhouses, each with a distinct style and a massive following. What started as a partnership based on shared values turned into a bitter rivalry in the hip-hop world. Their ongoing clash has sparked a public debate about the competitive nature of rap. But what has started all this? Let’s find out.

Kendrick Lamar vs Drake

How Did It All Start?

Tensions between Kendrick Lamar and Drake can be traced back to their early days in the rap game when they had a professional relationship. In 2011, Drake brought Kendrick onto his album Take Care for the song "Buried Alive Interlude." A year later, Drake and Kendrick's mutual admiration was evident in the hit single "Poetic Justice."

In 2013, Kendrick controversially targeted Drake and other rappers in Big Sean's "Control" verse. There was a lot of tension on the track as Kendrick Lamar boldly declared he was going to "murder" the competition, which was seen as a shot at several big names in the industry.

Drake's dismissal of Kendrick's lyrics as just an "ambitious thought" was quickly met with a fraught response. Many perceived the opening verse of the song "The Language" as a response to Kendrick's "Control" verse. In a surprising turn, Kendrick Lamar doubled down on his disses towards Drake at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards cipher.

The back-and-forth broke their relationship, leading to a rap battle showdown in 2024.

Fast-forward 10 years to October 2023, and tensions began to surface when J. Cole, another prominent rapper, referred to himself, Drake, and Kendrick as the "Big Three" of rap in the Drake song "First Person Shooter." Kendrick, who collaborated on Future and Metro Boomin's track "Like That," rejected the idea, arguing, "It's just big me," which many interpreted as a direct shot at Drake.

This is how Drake was urged to act, which started this most recent beef.
