In 2013, Kendrick controversially targeted Drake and other rappers in Big Sean's "Control" verse. There was a lot of tension on the track as Kendrick Lamar boldly declared he was going to "murder" the competition, which was seen as a shot at several big names in the industry.

In a surprising turn, Kendrick Lamar doubled down on his disses towards Drake at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards cipher.

Fast-forward 10 years to October 2023, and tensions began to surface when J. Cole, another prominent rapper, referred to himself, Drake, and Kendrick as the "Big Three" of rap in the Drake song "First Person Shooter." Kendrick, who collaborated on Future and Metro Boomin's track "Like That," rejected the idea, arguing, "It's just big me," which many interpreted as a direct shot at Drake.
