Tiger Woods holds numerous golf records. The 15-time major champion is currently tied for first with legend Sam Snead in PGA Tour wins (82 in 1,028 events), ranks No. 2 in Men's major championships behind Jack Nicklaus (18), has the most career earnings on the PGA Tour, with an astounding $157 million and counting, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2021.
The Stanford product became the first US golfer to win three straight US Amateur titles at the age of 20, and in 1996, he won the NCAA individual golf championship for the Cardinal. Woods was the PGA Player of the Year 11 times from 1997 to 2013, but it has been almost five years since he has won a PGA championship.
So, is Woods no longer a contender on the tour? Let's take a look at how he has fared in the three tournaments in which he has played so far in 2024 and see if Tiger Woods is playing in the US Open, the third major of the season, set for June 13-16 from Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
What was the Last Tournament Where Tiger Woods Won?
Woods has fallen off dramatically from his heyday on the PGA Tour with his last and 82nd win on the circuit, coming on October 27, in the Zozo Championship in Narashino, Japan, topping local hero Hideki Matsuyama by three strokes, carding a 19-under par 261 and winning a cool $1,755,000 in the process as he tied Snead with his 82nd PGA victory.
Tiger's first win on the tour came on October 6, 1996, at the Las Vegas Invitational in just his fifth start as a pro, and no other golfer has dominated the betting odds futures markets as Woods has in his career. Woods has won 14 tournaments wire-to-wire and is an amazing 39-11 when he has the lead after 36 holes, going 8-3 in 11 majors in that role.
Tiger Woods Withdraws From The Genesis Invitational
Woods, who holds the record for the most consecutive weeks as the world's No. 1 ranked golfer, started 2024 off with some links misery at The Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, in February.
After shooting a 72 over the first 18 holes in the tourney, Woods withdrew after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole, leaving the course on a golf cart driven by a PGA tournament official.
Woods suffered from the flu and ended with a 96 (+2) and won no money in his first outing of three in 2024. So Father Time, a car wreck, and a fused back and right ankle have made winning and playing in tournaments—and even making the cut—an ordeal for Woods these days.
Tiger Woods Makes the Cut at the 2024 Masters
After his disappointing finish at The Genesis Invitational in February, Woods showed some promise at one of the most prestigious tournaments on the PGA Tour, The Masters Tournament, which will be held at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia, from March 11 to 14.
Woods, who has won the Masters and worn the Green Jacket five times, shot a 1 over par in Round 1 (73) and then came back with an even-par 72 in Round 2, making the cut for a record 24th straight time at the 88th Masters. He ended up tied for 22nd at 1 over par.
But despite making the cut, Augusta was hard on Woods on the weekend. He shot a 10 over par 82 on Saturday, followed by a 5 over par 77 on Sunday to end up 16 over par (204) and in a disappointing 60th place, winning just $44,000.
Tiger Woods Misses the Cut at the 2024 PGA Championship
Woods' disappointing finish in the first major of 2024 at Augusta doesn't look so bad compared to his performance at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky from May 16-19.
After firing a 1 over par 72 in Round 1 on Thursday, May 16, Woods had an abysmal Round 2 at Valhalla on Friday with two triple-bogeys and three bogeys to finish the round at 77, missing the cutline at 149 (+7). Woods did have three birdies in the round and almost had a hole-in-one on the 8th hole, but his third 2024 event was another disappointment.
Will Tiger Woods be Golfing in the 2024 US Open?
So, is Tiger Woods playing in the US Open from June 13-16 at Pinehurst No. 2 in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina? The answer is yes. Woods will play in the third major of the year in the Tar Heel State, as he accepted a special exemption
"The US Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career," Woods said of the exemption. "I'm honored to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year's US Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game."
Woods has won the US Open three times, but with how he has looked in the first three tournaments he has played this year, making the cut may again be the most he can ask for. Gone are the days when Woods, one of five golfers to achieve a career Grand Slam, was always the odds favorite in Futures markets in the sports books.
Looking at the betting numbers for the 2024 US Open, we find Woods as a huge +19000 longshot (190/1), so a win in his 23rd appearance at Pinehurst seems like wishful thinking. The favorite heading into the tournament is Scottie Scheffler(4/1), the No. 1 ranked golfer on the PGA Tour and winner of the 2024 Masters.
Woods' last major win was in 2019 when he won his fifth Masters at Augusta. That marked a massive 11-year stretch between major wins for one of the best golfers in history.
