2024 Indianapolis 500 Race, Weekend Overview

The biggest weekend of the IndyCar Series year is upon us from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana—a residential suburb of Indianapolis created in 1912—with Carb Friday (Friday, May 24), Qualifying (Saturday-Sunday, May 25-26) and the big race, the 108th Indianapolis 500 set for Sunday, May 26, weather permitting.

In the running of the 2023 Indianapolis 500, Josef Newgarden emerged victorious for Team Penske, and the 33-year-old American from Henderson, Tennessee, will be back to try to defend his title and is the oddsmakers’ second favorite to win the Borg-Warner Trophy at +550 (11/2) odds.

On Tuesday, May 14, practice on the famous 2½-mile oval track began, with time trials being held May 18-19. With a blazing four-lap speed of 234.220 mph, Team Penske’s McLaughlin registered the fastest average pole speed in Indy 500 history, thus securing the race’s coveted pole position this Sunday.

His Team Penske teammates, Josef Newgarden and Will Power, snagged the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in the front row, the first time a team has accomplished the feat since Team Penske did so some 36 years ago back in 1988.

Castroneves, Larson Will Try to Make a Little History on Sunday

Other IndyCar drivers shooting for a little piece of history this Sunday include Brazilian Hélio Castroneves (40/1 to win Indianapolis 500, DraftKings), who will try to become the first five-time winner (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021) at The Brickyard, and Kyle Larson (7/1), who will try to race in and win both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in the same day.

Indianapolis 500 Weekend Will be Full of Fun...Weather Permitting

Jordin Sparks, the winner of American Idol in 2017, will sing the national anthem before the 500-mile, 200-lap race in Naptown on Sunday. Phillips will sing "God Bless America" before the 33 drivers rev up their engines.

The last day of practice for the drivers and their teams, Carb Day, will be held on Friday, May 24. Practice is scheduled to run from noon to 6 pm CT. The Qualifying Draw will be held at 6:15 pm CT. The Pit Stop Challenge will also be held on Carb Day on May 24. This year's Carb Day concert musical performers will include George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Gin Blossoms, and Kid Quill.

On Saturday and Sunday, the qualifying rounds will be held. The weather forecast for Indianapolis this weekend calls for isolated thunderstorms and a high of 84° on Friday, scattered thunderstorms with a high of 82° forecast for Saturday, and thunderstorms with a high of 79° on Sunday, so Mother Nature may end up playing a big part at The Brickyard this weekend. There may be some schedule changes if these rainy forecasts pan out.

Indy 500 May See Fifth Winner in Five Races in 2024 IndyCar Series Circuit

The Indianapolis 500 is the fifth race of the 2024 IndyCar Series season, which started this year on Sunday, March 10, with the 2024 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg, Florida, which Mexican Pato O'Ward won.

The Grand Prix of Long Beach was the second race on the IndyCar series circuit. It was held on a street track in downtown Long Beach, California, on Sunday, April 21, and was won by Scott Dixon. The third race this season was the Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix from the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday, April 28. In that race, Scott McLaughlin captured the checkered flag in his Team Penske Chevrolet.

The last and fourth 2024 IndyCar Series race of the season was The Grand Prix of Indianapolis—held here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 11—and it was won by Spaniard Álex Palou, who was the race pole-sitter, had the fastest lap and also led the most laps in the race.

Four different IndyCar Series drivers have won the first four races on the circuit, and we will see if a fifth driver will win the biggest race of the year this Memorial Day weekend.
