2024 Men's College World Series Preview

The 77th NCAA Division I Baseball Championship has been reduced from 64 teams to the final eight, who will now head to the 2024 Men’s College World Series, which starts this weekend on Friday, June 14, at Charles Schwab Field(formerly TD Ameritrade Park).

Game 1 of the double-elimination CWS will come at 2 pm EDT (1 pm CDT/11 am PDT), and the tournament is scheduled to run until Sunday, June 23 or Monday, June 24. Last year, LSU won the MCWS, trouncing Florida State 18-4 in the final game as the Tigers captured their seventh national championship.

With LSU having been eliminated by North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Regional Finals, there will be a new champion in Omaha this time around. There have been 12 non-back-to-back winners over the last 12 times the MCWS has been contested, with Vanderbilt winning the national title twice (2014, 2019).

An SEC team has won nine of the last 13 years at Charles Schwab Field (Kentucky Bluegrass).

How the 2024 MCWS Pared Down From 64 to Final 8 Teams

The 64 schools who made the NCAA D1 Baseball Tournament were picked from 300 eligible teams, with 30 of the teams being awarded automatic bids by virtue of winning their conferences with the other 34 teams nabbing at-large bids after being selected by the NCAA Division 1 Baseball Committee.

The 64 teams were then divided into 16 double-elimination Regionals of four, each with the winners of these 16 Regionals then advancing to the Super Regionals. In these eight Super Regionals, the surviving teams again competed in a best-of-3 series to play for their sacred chance at the Omaha 2024 Men’s College World Series.

Nine of the top 12 national seeds—Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, NC State, and Virginia—with Arkansas (No. 5), Oklahoma (No. 9) and Oklahoma State (No. 11) all having been eliminated by the Super Regionals.

Here is what happened in the eight Regionals and Super Regionals from Friday, June 7, through Monday, June 10, with these eight of these winners all moving on to Omaha.

Knoxville Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that played in the Knoxville Super Regional were the host and national top-seed Tennessee, Southern Miss, Indiana, Northern Kentucky, East Carolina, Evansville, VCU, and Wake Forest.

The host Volunteers and Southern Miss met in the Knoxville Regional Final, with Tennessee prevailing (12-3). Evansville upended East Carolina in the Greenville Regional, which was in the bottom half of the bracket.

In the Knoxville Super Regional Finals, Tennessee held off Evansville, 11-6, in Game 1 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Volunteers then lost to the Purple Aces in Game 2 the following day, 10-8. In the do-or-die Game 3 on Sunday, June 9, host Tennessee pounded Evansville 12-1 to punch its ticket to Omaha.

Tallahassee Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that made it to the Tallahassee Super Regional were host Florida State, Stetson, UCF, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Connecticut, and Duke. In the Norman Regional at Dale Mitchell Baseball Park in Norman, OK, the host Sooners met the Huskies in the Regional Final. UConn pulled off the big upset, handing OU both its first (4-1) and second (7-1) losses.

In the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, FL, No. 8 seed FSU beat UCF in the Regional Final to set a Super Regional Finals best-of-3 against UConn. In Game 1 on June 7 in the Sunshine State, the Seminoles stomped a mud hole in UConn, winning 24-4. In Game 2 on June 8, FSU sent the Huskies on their merry way, winning 10-8 in 12 innings as the host team qualified for the 2024 MCWS.

Charlottesville Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams who made it to the Charlottesville Super Regional were host Virginia, Penn, St. John’s Mississippi State, Arkansas, Southeast Missouri State, Louisiana Tech, and Kansas State.

In the Fayetteville Regional at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas, top-seed Arkansas was knocked out by upstarts Kansas State and SEMO, who both made it to the Regional Finals, where the Wildcats won 7-2.

In the Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, top-seed Virginia met Mississippi State in the Regional Finals, and the Cavaliers advanced to the Super Regional Finals with a 9-2 win. In Game 1 on June 7, Virginia defeated KSU 7-4 in the best-of-3 series before eliminating the Wildcats 10-4 in Game 2 on June 8.

Chapel Hill Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that made it to the Chapel Hill Super Regional were host North Carolina, LIU, LSU, Wofford, Arizona, Grand Canyon, West Virginia, and Dallas Baptist. In the Tucson Regional at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona, West Virginia and Grand Canyon collided in the Regional Final, with the Mountaineers winning 10-8.

In the Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Tar Heels met last year’s defending national champions, LSU, in the Regional Finals in one of the best games of the 2024 D1 baseball season. NC won 4-3 in 10 innings to survive and set up a Super Regional Finals series against West Virginia.

On June 7, the Tar Heels played another thriller in Game 1, beating WV 8-6 as Vance Honeycutt blasted a game-winning walk-off two-run home run for the hosts. In Game 2 on Saturday, June 8, NC punched its ticket to Omaha by eliminating WV, 2-1, sweeping the series.

Lexington Regional and Super Regional Recap

The Lexington Super Regional saw host Kentucky, Western Michigan, Indiana State, Oregon State, Tulane, Nicholls, and UC Irvine all fighting for that one spot in Omaha. In the Lexington Regional at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington, the host Wildcats met Indiana State in the Regional Final, where they prevailed 5-0.

In the Corvallis Regional at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in Corvallis, Oregon, the Beavers beat UC Irvine, 11-6, to set up a showdown with Kentucky in the Bluegrass State. On Saturday, June 8, in Game 1 of the Lexington Super Regional, the Wildcats shut out Oregon State, 10-0, before winning Game 2 on Sunday, June 9, 3-2, to qualify for the MCWS.

Athens Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that made it to the Athens Super Regional were NC State, Bryant, James Madison, South Carolina, host Georgia, UNC Wilmington, Army, and Georgia Tech. In the Raleigh Regional Finals at Doak Field in Raleigh, North Carolina, NC State eliminated James Madison, while in the Athens Regional at Foley Field, the host Bulldogs eliminated rivals Georgia Tech 8-6.

No. 7 seed NC State mauled no. 7 seed Georgia, 18-1 in Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional on June 8 before evening up the series with the Wolfpack, winning 11-2 in Game 2. On Monday, June 10, in the last Super Regional game, NC State eliminated Georgia, 8-5, as the Wolfpack smashed four home runs to earn the last precious spot in the 2024 Men’s College World Series.

Clemson Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that made it to the Clemson Super Regional were Oklahoma State, Niagara, Nebraska, Florida, High Point, Vanderbilt, Coastal Carolina, and host Clemson. The Tigers beat Coastal Carolina 12-5 in the Clemson Regional Final at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina.

In the Stillwater Regional at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Florida defeated the hosts, winning two straight times (5-2, 4-2) after losing to the Cowboys, 7-1, and being just one loss away from being bounced from the tournament.

So that set up a collision between Clemson and Florida in the Clemson Super Regional. On Saturday, June 8, the Gators took a bite out of the Tigers in Game 1, 10-7, before Florida ousted Clemson in Game 2 in a thriller on Sunday, June 9, winning 11-10 in 13 innings to make it to the CWS in Omaha.

College Station Regional and Super Regional Recap

The eight teams that made it to the College Station Super Regional were UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, Oregon, San Diego, Texas A&M, Grambling State, Texas, and Louisiana.

Oregon ousted host UCSB in the Santa Barbara Regional at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, California. In contrast, the host Aggies eliminated Louisiana in the College Station Regional at Blue Bell Park in College Station, Texas.

In the College Station Super Regional, tournament No. 3 seed Texas A&M beat Oregon 10-5 in Game 1 on Saturday, June 8, before ousting the Beavers on Sunday, June 9, 15-9 at Blue Bell Park.
