THE HISTORY OF THE SUPER BOWL

From high school homecomings to Ivy League colleges, football is a staple of American culture, with its unique form and gameplay setting it apart from other countries. Commemorating American football as the most important and popular sport in America is the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl, initially known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game in its first two seasons, was first played in 1967 after a merger between the two major professional American football leagues. The highly anticipated event is a league championship game played by the winners of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference which signals the close of the National Football League season.

Today, the Super Bowl has extended beyond a game of football, growing into a momentous global pop culture event. Scheduled annually for the second Sunday in February, the event has grown to encapsulate an intersection of music, the arts, sports, and advertisement.

THE HALFTIME SHOW AT THE SUPER BOWL

Halftime performances for entertainment are a norm at American football games, and the Super Bowl is no different. In the beginning, the halftime show at the Super Bowl was taken over by marching bands from colleges, and drill teams, impersonating magicians and performances by the non-profit organization Up With People. However, in the late 90s, performances by mainstream music musicians were introduced into the Super Bowl Halftime Show. NBC, the main streaming platform for the Super Bowl, had no choice but to transform the shows into elaborate musical productions to secure the audience’s attention for advertisements during intermission.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson became the first popular music artist in January 1993 to hit the stage at Super Bowl XXVII in California. Michael Jackson performed hits such as Billie Jean and Black & White, cementing the show remains one of the most epic Super Bowl halftime shows. Since then, a handful of stars have graced the Super Bowl halftime stage, such as Lady GagaKaty PerryMadonna, and Janet Jackson, among others. Subsequently, as time passed, the halftime shows attracted and lured music fans as viewers.

MOST ICONIC MOMENTS AT THE SUPER BOWL

The Super Bowl Halftime shows have taken center stage, becoming a main event just like the championship games. The Halftime Shows have birthed iconic moments since the introduction of performances by mainstream artists. For Super Bowl 50 in 2016, one of the world’s most influential rock bands, Coldplay, headlined the halftime show. Halfway through the performance, the band was joined by two previous halftime show performers, Bruno Mars and Beyonce. Mars, accompanied by producer Mark Ronson, performed their 2014 top hit, Uptown Funk. The final notes of Uptown Funk seamlessly transitioned into Formation by Beyonce as she made her way to the stage from the field with her band of all-female dancers, dressed in Black Panther costumes and hard-hitting choreography.

The Super Bowl has also become notorious for its halftime ads. Brands hurry to fill up primetime advertisement spaces. The promotional videos for these brands are creative, with star-studded appearances.
