Melt-Banana are a Japanese noise rock band from Tokyo, formed in 1991, built around the screeched vocals of Yasuko Onuki and the dissonant guitar of Ichirou Agata. Onuki started the group as Mizu while studying at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, recruiting Agata before the pair settled on the current name three years later. Their debut cassette album, Cactuses Come in Flocks, came out on the British label Chocolate Monk, and its success led to a deal with Skin Graft for Speak Squeak Creak and Scratch or Stitch, records that found an audience in the United States.
