Midge Ure is a Scottish singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and humanitarian born James Ure on October 10, 1953, in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland — one of the defining figures of the 1980s British music scene. His stage name is a phonetic reversal of Jim. He began his career with Slik — formerly known as Salvation, the house band at Glasgow disco Clouds — before turning down an offer to front the Sex Pistols. After Rich Kids (with Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock and Rusty Egan) and a brief stint as guitarist in Thin Lizzy, Ure co-founded Visage in 1978 with Steve Strange, Billy Currie, and Egan — helping launch the New Romantic genre via Strange's Blitz Club. In 1979, Currie convinced Ure to join Ultravox as singer and guitarist alongside Currie, bassist Chris Cross, and drummer Warren Cann, overhauling their sound entirely and generating landmark hits including "Vienna" — the all-time UK runner-up single, beaten to number one by Joe Dolce's "Shaddap You Face" — "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes," and "Reap the Wild Wind." In 1984, Ure co-wrote with Bob Geldof and produced "Do They Know It's Christmas?" — the best-selling single of all time in Britain — jointly co-founded the Band Aid Trust, and co-organised Live Aid. In 1985 he scored his only solo UK number one with "If I Was," followed by the album The Gift. A 2008 Ultravox reunion led to their final studio album Brilliant (2012). In October 2023 Ure celebrated his 70th birthday with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
