In 1977 he left Dimensión Latina to launch his solo career, forming the orchestra Salsa Mayor and later La Crítica before establishing Oscar D'León y su Orquesta, becoming an international phenomenon with more than sixty albums to his name. Deeply influenced by Cuban soneros Beny Moré and La Sonora Matancera, as well as the New York salsa sound of the 1960s — particularly Eddie Palmieri and the Fania generation — D'León has collaborated with Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, and Cheo Feliciano. His album El Sonero del Mundo, produced by Willy Chirino, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. Since 1998, New York City has celebrated Oscar D'León Day on March 15 every year in his honor. In 2015, he received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador and was named artistic patrimony of Venezuela.
