Purpose is a play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins that won both the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. Set over one explosive evening in present-day Chicago, it follows the Jaspers, a prominent Black political family whose patriarch was a civil rights leader, as the youngest son returns home with an unexpected guest and the family's carefully managed public image begins to crack. Commissioned by Steppenwolf Theatre Company, it premiered in Chicago before transferring to Broadway's Helen Hayes Theater in February 2025 under the direction of Phylicia Rashad. The win made Jacobs-Jenkins the first Black playwright to take Best Play since August Wilson in 1987.
