Ruel is a British-Australian singer and songwriter born Ruel Vincent van Dijk on October 29, 2002, in Isleworth, London — raised in Sydney, Australia, from age four after his family relocated there in 2006. His father Ralph van Dijk is the founder of Australian audio agency Eardrum; his mother Kate is British. Ruel began playing guitar at eight and wrote his first song at twelve, and at that age recorded a cover of James Bay's "Let It Go" which his father sent to Grammy Award-winning producer M-Phazes — launching a mentorship and creative partnership that defined Ruel's early career. In April 2017, fourteen-year-old Ruel debuted with the single "Golden Years" (co-written with M-Phazes), which led to an international deal with RCA Records in November 2017. His second single "Don't Tell Me" went gold, and by 2018 he had released debut EP Ready and was performing at Australia's Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. His single "Dazed & Confused" won him the 2018 ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist; "Younger" earned further gold and platinum certifications. His second EP Free Time (2019) deepened his artistic acclaim; his third EP Bright Lights, Red Eyes followed in 2020. The youngest artist to sell out the Sydney Opera House (twice), he has been praised by Elton John and toured with Khalid and Shawn Mendes. His debut full-length 4th Wall (March 3, 2023, RCA/Sony Music Australia) debuted at number one on the ARIA Charts. His sophomore album Kicking My Feet (October 17, 2025, Giant Music) debuted at number six on the ARIA Charts.
