Soft Cell were an English synth-pop duo formed in 1978 at Leeds Polytechnic, where vocalist Marc Almond (born July 9, 1957, in Southport) and producer and instrumentalist Dave Ball (born May 3, 1959, in Chester, raised in Blackpool) met as art students united by a love of "catchy but twisted pop songs." Their debut EP Mutant Moments (1980), funded by a £2,000 loan from Ball's mother, led to a deal with Some Bizzare/Phonogram Records. Their 1981 cover of "Tainted Love" — originally a 1965 Northern soul track by Gloria Jones, written by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps — hit number one in 17 countries, sold over 1.05 million UK copies, and set a Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive stay (43 weeks) on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their platinum debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and twelve UK top 40 hits — including "Torch" (number 2), "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," and "Bedsitter" — helped them sell over 21 million records and pave the way for Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Tears for Fears, and Eurythmics. After splitting in 1984, they reformed in 2001 and held a reunion concert at the O2 in London in September 2018, later releasing their fifth album Happiness Not Included (2022, BMG) featuring a collaboration with Pet Shop Boys. Ball died on 22 October 2025 at age 66, shortly after completing the posthumous album Danceteria (2026).
