SYML — pronounced "sim-muhl," Welsh for "simple" — is the solo project of American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Leseney Fennell, born January 16, 1983, in Issaquah, Washington — one of the most emotionally powerful and quietly beloved artists in contemporary indie folk and alternative pop, celebrated for a textural, atmospheric sound built on hushed vocals, shimmering keyboards, and deeply introspective songwriting. After releasing solo album Safety Songs (2005), he formed indie-pop band Barcelona with Brian Eichelberger, Chris Bristol, and Rhett Stonelake; their debut Absolutes (2007) was signed and re-released by Universal Records in 2009. After Barcelona wound down, Fennell launched SYML with breakthrough single "Where's My Love" (2017) — a haunting, folk-inspired track that spent over 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart, was featured in Teen Wolf and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, and earned platinum certification; its unexpected rise was partly sparked by Shazam. His self-titled debut album (May 3, 2019, Nettwerk Records) earned widespread critical acclaim; EPs You Knew It Was Me (2020), DIM (2021), and Sacred Spaces (2021) followed, alongside streaming hit "You and I" (2022, with Charlotte Lawrence). Sophomore album The Day My Father Died (2023) — produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins) — grappled with his adoptive father's decline from Alzheimer's disease. Third album Nobody Lives Here (2025) continued his restless artistic evolution.
