Taproot is an American alternative metal band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, formed in 1997 by Stephen Richards, Mike DeWolf, Phil Lipscomb and Jarrod Montague. Their 2000 debut Gift was followed by Ozzfest slots in 2000 and 2001, and 2002's Welcome became their commercial peak, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200 and selling around 475,000 copies on the strength of "Poem." Blue-Sky Research followed in 2005 with three songs co-written by Billy Corgan, after which Atlantic parted ways with the band. After The Episodes in 2012 they stayed off record for eleven years while continuing to play live, a gap Richards has attributed to health problems. He recorded SC\SSRS alone, intending it as a solo record, until Lipscomb persuaded him to release it as Taproot in September 2023.
