The Automatic (known as The Automatic Automatic in the US and Canada) were a Welsh indie rock and electro-punk band from Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, formed around 2002–2003 by vocalist and bassist Robin Hawkins, guitarist James Frost, and drummer Iwan Griffiths — all classmates since primary school. Originally calling themselves White Rabbit and Teen Spirit before settling on their final name in February 2005, the four-piece (completed by keyboardist Alex Pennie) signed a five-album deal with B-Unique Records and Polydor Records in their gap year. Their debut album Not Accepted Anywhere (2006) debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and went platinum, spawning three UK top 40 singles — "Monster" (number four), "Recover," and "Raoul" — with "Monster" becoming an anthem of the mid-2000s UK indie boom. After Pennie's departure in September 2007, Paul Mullen — formerly of Yourcodenameis:milo — joined as vocalist and guitarist for their second album This Is a Fix (2008) and third album Tear the Signs Down (2010), the latter released on their own label Armoured Records through EMI. Influenced by Muse, Blur, Manic Street Preachers, and Jarcrew, the band headlined the NME Awards Tour in 2007 and appeared at Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, and SXSW. They entered an indefinite hiatus following Tear the Signs Down.
