The Chats are an Australian punk rock band from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, formed in September 2016 when Josh Price (guitar), Matt Boggis (drums), and Eamon Sandwith (bass and vocals) — then seventeen years old — came together at St. Teresa's Catholic College in Noosaville. They describe their sound as "shed rock," taking their name from the Australian slang phrase "that's chat" — meaning something gross or bad. Their self-titled debut EP was released on November 7, 2016 — just weeks before they graduated high school — described by triple j as "seven joyous sky-punching tracks that combined 60s garage punk and 70s new wave punk." Their second EP Get This in Ya!! arrived on July 31, 2017, and a few months later the music video for "Smoko" — a gloriously deadpan ode to the Australian smoko (smoke break) tradition — went viral overnight, racking up millions of YouTube views in days and drawing praise from Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and Iggy Pop; triple j called it "an instant classic of a youth anthem on a par with 'You Really Got Me,' 'My Generation,' or 'Teenage Kicks.'" The band signed a global deal with Universal Music Publishing Australia in 2019 and founded their own Bargain Bin Records imprint. Their debut album High Risk Behaviour (March 27, 2020) hit the Australian Top Ten and featured fan favorites "Pub Feed" and "Identity Theft." Original guitarist Josh Price departed in 2020 and was replaced by Josh Hardy. Second album Get Fucked (August 19, 2022, Bargain Bin) — recorded in six days in Brisbane — confirmed the band's raw, rowdy identity with singles including "Struck by Lightning" and "I've Been Drunk in Every Pub in Brisbane."
