Lisa Lisa, real name Lisa Velez, is a singer who came to fame in the 80s in the band Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. She grew up in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, and spoke Spanish and English. She sang in church and as part of a traveling singing group, and was an A student at school. Lisa Lisa formed her band after auditioning for a Brooklyn production team. The group recorded their debut single in 1985 and released it independently. They were quickly signed, and the single was re-released, becoming one of their many hit songs. The group declined later in the 80s, and Lisa Lisa released a solo album in 1994 to moderate success. She continues to record and release, but in 2019, she was signed with Snopp Dog’s Army. In 2025, Lifetime put out a Lisa Lisa biopic, in which she played her own mother.
