The Louisville Cardinals basketball program has long been considered one of the nation’s strongest NCAA teams, having appeared 39 times in the NCAA March Madness postseason tournament and emerging victorious on three occasions (1980, 1986, 2013). The team has struggled in recent seasons, particularly in 2022-23 when they posted a dire 4-28 record under new coach Kenny Payne. The Cardinals‘ huge legions of devoted fans will be hoping for much better in 2024 and the seasons to come.
The Cardinals’ popularity in Louisville is obvious given the huge size of the KFC Yum Center, which is one of the largest college basketball venues in the country. In spite of the venue’s 20,000-plus capacity, postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below) still often sell out. The Louisville Cardinals have an intense state rivalry with the storied Kentucky Wildcats that has been described as one of the best in college basketball. The teams actually did not play each other much for seventy years (1913-1983), but the rivalry heated up again in the 80s after they met in Elite 8 of the NCAA March Madness tournament, with Louisville winning 80-68. The teams have played one another once a year ever since. The Louisville Cardinals also have a long-standing rivalry against the Cincinnati Bearcats. In recent years, a rivalry with the Clemson Tigers has developed, with the Cardinals winning in 2023 but the Tigers triumphant in 2024.
Though recent years have seen lagging attendances at times. Nothing beats the huge KFC Yum Center packed to the rafters with wild home fans for the biggest Louisville Cardinals home games.
