About Aespa

South Korean girl group Aespa (에스파) is a girl group formed in 2020 by SM Entertainment. The group is made up of four members: Giselle, Winter, Karina, and Ningning. Aespa has gained a global following in quick time and is one of the most successful fourth-generation K-pop groups thanks to their particular niche of K-pop that is blended with futuristic visuals and concepts.

Band Creation and Concept

On October 26, 2020, SM Entertainment announced Aespa as their first new girl group since the quartet Red Velvet in 2014. The group's name is a combination of "ae" (avatar and experience) and "aspect," symbolizing the idea of meeting another self and experiencing a new world. Aespa's concept revolves around a metaverse narrative, with each member having a virtual counterpart, called an "ae".

Aespa debuted on November 17, 2020, with their single "Black Mamba," which achieved the highest number of views in 24 hours for a K-pop group's debut video. They have since released several successful singles and albums, including:

  • "Next Level" (May 2021), which peaked at number two on the Circle Digital Chart and earned the Daesang for Song of the Year at the 19th Korean Music Awards.

  • "Savage" EP (October 2021), their first extended play, which achieved commercial success.

  • "Girls" (July 2022), their second mini-album.

  • "My World" (May 2023), their third mini-album.

In its debut year, Aespa has been winning numerous awards, including Rookie of the Year at all major Korean music awards. In addition, they've taken home multiple music show wins and have record album sales.
