Have you ever wondered how the evolution of boy bands dates back to the legendary American R&B/pop group New Edition in the 1980s? The New Edition began their journey back in 1978 in Boston, Massachusetts, and enjoyed a sensation spotlight in the 1980s. The original lineup featured lead singers Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown, alongside vocalists Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, making the audience reminiscent of the classic Jackson 5.

The band made its fans swoon over their cool dance moves and impeccably synced vocals. They were crowned with chart-toppers like “Candy Girl” and "Mr. Telephone Man," which influenced the formation of new boy bands such as New Kids on the Block, The Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC.

All was well until 1984 when the group cut ties with their producer Maurice Starr. But, despite the split, they continued to deliver hits like "Cool It Now" and "Count Me Out."

Bobby Brown quit in 1986, due to behavioral issues, and went on to make history. Brown went on to enjoy a remarkable solo career with his album Don't Be Cruel (1988) and won the Grammy Awards with "Every Little Step." He also had an iconic marriage with Whitney Houston, which unfortunately ended in 2007.

Brown leaving The New Edition led to the introduction of Johnny Gill, who brought in a breath of fresh air to the group’s music, notably with the album Heart Break.

New Edition officially reunited in 1996 for the Home Again album, which delighted fans who were looking forward to a reunion since their semi-reunion in 1991 for the remix of Bell Biv DeVoe's "Word To The Mutha!"

Despite these reunions, the band still suffered from back-to-back fallouts during their tours, resulting in Mike Bivins to leaving in 1997. The group moved to take an indefinite hiatus.

New Edition reformed in 2002 without Bobby Brown and released the album One Love which welcomed them back with success and love, as their reunion brought back the era of rejoicing in New Edition’s music.

New Edition Tour Journey and Way Ahead

The band embarked on a series of tours, starting with the All Six Tour in 2014, followed by the Greatest Hits Tour in 2016, and the Culture Tour in 2022. Their latest endeavor, The Legacy Tour, took place from March 9 to April 30, 2023, commemorating the 40th anniversary of their debut album, 1983's Candy Girl.

Hinting at the possibility of fresh tunes, New Edition, who hasn't unveiled a new album since 2004, is contemplating the release of new music in anticipation of their upcoming residency stint.

Ronnie DeVoe, in one of his interviews, expressed optimism about this musical endeavor, emphasizing the right moment to hit the studio and deliver something unique and exciting for their loyal fanbase as they eagerly await their residency.

As 2024 now sprinkles new excitement as New Edition members Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown (who officially rejoined after 2005!), Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant now coming to Las Vegas!

The cozy 1,480-seat concert venue, Wynn Las Vegas Encore Theater, will host six live performances featuring New Edition from February 28 until March 9, 2024, the legendary R&B ensemble will start their Las Vegas residency at the Theater.

Cool It Now

Released in 1984, when the band members were just 10 years old, "Cool It Now" stands as one of New Edition's early hits, showcasing their transition from teenage sensations to mature artists. Catching in rhyme the essence of young love, the song's success hit the US Billboard Hot 100 at Number 4.

Can You Stand the Rain

In 1988, New Edition released the soulful "Can You Stand the Rain," a timeless piece that has resonated across generations. The romantically woven question of weathering storms in one’s relationship, this beautiful ballad uses skillful imagery and diction. The track saw fans wholeheartedly embrace the newly joined Johnny Gill as an integral part of New Edition as the track topped the Billboard R&B charts.

Mr. Telephone Man

"Mr. Telephone Man," released in 1984, is a playful yet soulful track that showcases New Edition's ability to blend R&B with a pop touch. The song's narrative revolves around defeated young hearts aching over the chase of not being able to speak to their love. Its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus made it a hit while crooning how “This situation's blowing my mind.”

New Edition Story
