About Ichiko Aoba
Who is Ichiko Aoba?
Ichiko Aoba is a Japanese singer-songwriter and musician from Kyoto, Japan. Music critics describe her sound like “flowing water and rustling leaves” when they analyze her work.
Early Life and Background
Aoba was born on January 28, 1990 in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, then moved to Kyoto Prefecture where she spent her childhood. At age three Aoba started her musical training with a red toy piano purchased by her parents. She would play along with commercial jingles and anime songs in front of the television, showing an early affinity for music.
From elementary school onward she trained through school ensembles by joining the choir group and playing clarinet with the brass band. In high school, she joined the light music club where she experimented with various instruments including keyboard, guitar, drums, and bass, playing whatever instrument was available for each song. Despite this exposure, she was entirely self-taught and admits she still doesn't understand formal chord theory.
Throughout high school, Aoba worked multiple part-time jobs to accumulate enough funds to take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo for concerts before returning to Kyoto via night bus. A pivotal moment came at age 15 when she encountered singer-songwriter Anmi Yamada, who was performing in a band at the time.
The sight of Yamada playing solo with an eight-string classical guitar at age 17 motivated Aoba to buy a junior-sized Yamaha classical guitar and start studying on her own. Though she bought an instruction manual, she largely developed her own unique playing style through experimentation.
Through Yamada's guidance, Aoba started learning to replicate parts of her songs. Aoba started writing her music after Yamada suggested she pursue songwriting. Following high school, Aoba enrolled in a university in Kyoto, majoring in literature with a focus on Japanese language teaching certification. However, at age 19, she released her first album Kamisori Otome (Razor Girl) through an independent label in January 2010. By autumn of that year, at age 20, she found it difficult to balance her studies with music and decided to drop out of university to focus on her musical career, moving to Tokyo.
Rise to Fame
Her debut album Kamisori Otome, released in 2010 when she was just 19, garnered critical attention for its unique blend of classical guitar and dreamy folk. From the beginning Aoba resisted the public eye yet her distinctive musical approach and genuine musical methods steadily gained her loyal followers.
Aoba achieved her first major musical breakthrough by releasing 0 as her fourth studio album in 2013 via her collaboration with producer ZAK. Through her partnership with ZAK, she included field recordings in her music compositions while expanding her musical palette. The album's success, coupled with high-profile collaborations with artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cornelius, and Haruomi Hosono, elevated Aoba's status in the industry. Her independent label “Hermine” released the Windswept Adan album in 2020 which advanced her career globally while establishing her position as a leading artist in contemporary folk music.
Activities outside Music
Beyond her musical career, Ichiko Aoba has explored various creative endeavors. She has written and illustrated a children's book titled Ohayou to Oyasumi (Good Morning and Good Night), published in 2015.
Through her work, Aoba participates in environmental activities by introducing themes of sustainability to both her creative projects and her public actions. Her connection to nature is not just a musical motif but extends to her personal philosophy and activism.
