About Jason Isbell

Jason Isbell (born February 1, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter known for his solo career and his work with the band The 400 Unit. He formerly played with the southern rock band Drive-By Truckers.

Biography and History

Isbell was born in Green Hill, Alabama. His North Alabama roots run deep into his songwriting and music and he frequently writes of his own life and that of the folks in the area. Drive-By Truckers served as his first base in music, where he wrote some of his most memorable songs.

After leaving Drive-By Truckers in 2007, Isbell embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album Sirens of the Ditch in July 2007. He then formed The 400 Unit, who released their self-titled album in February 2009.

Rise to Fame

Isbell's breakthrough came with the release of Southeastern in July 2013, which debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums. The album got glowing press reviews and subsequently won Album of the Year at the 2014 Americana Music Awards.

His subsequent album Something More Than Free, released in July 2015, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums, Folk Albums, and Country Albums charts. This album won two Grammy Awards, Best Americana Album, and Best American Roots Song.
