About Kenshi Yonezu

Born in Tokushima, Japan on March 10, 1991, Kenshi Yonezu was raised in that same city. He is a J-pop singer, songwriter, artist, and music creator. He first became known online as a Vocaloid music maker (producer) called "Hachi" but later started using his real name in 2012.

His Vocaloid Beginnings as “Hachi”

Kenshi Yonezu began his musical journey in 2009 under the pseudonym "Hachi," uploading Vocaloid songs to Nico Nico Douga. Among the predominantly cute pop styles from other Vocaloid songs at that time, his own style was filled with rough and wild melodies. Yonezu's fourth upload, "Close and Open, the Rakshasa and the Corpse," became his first million-view hit, followed by popular tracks like "Matryoshka" and "Panda Hero".

From Producer to Solo Career

Kenshi Yonezu transitioned from Vocaloid producer to solo artist as part of a large-scale career development.

Yonezu's major label debut came in 2013 with the single "Santa Maria," signaling his commitment to creating universally appealing pop songs. During this time, he worked with other musicians, such as longtime bandmates Hiroshi Nakajima, Yuu Sudou, and Masaki Hori. Not long after that, he was launching his career into his first one-man concert and tour.

Global Impact of “Lemon”

Kenshi Yonezu's 2018 single "Lemon" catapulted him to international stardom, becoming a more global and cultural phenomenon. The song, which served as the theme for the TV drama "Unnatural," topped the Oricon charts and achieved over a billion views on YouTube.

The unprecedented success of "Lemon" not only set Yonezu up as a prominent figure in the Japanese music industry but also opened doors for global recognition of J-pop. The song went on to have a huge impact across Asia even if K-pop idols were covering it and making it even bigger. Yonezu's ability to create music that connects with people on a profound level, coupled with the song's success on platforms like TikTok, seems to have contributed to its viral spread.
