Who are King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard?
The versatile Melbourne, Australian rock band known as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (KGLW) has been around since 2010 and has created albums with a variety of musical styles. Known for their energetic live shows, KGLW is part Pink Floyd, part Traffic, part King Crimson, part Grateful Dead, part Phish, part The Doors, and part Frank Zappa, although there is no group comparable to them in terms of changing musical focus and releasing albums.
The band is a group of friends who met right out of high school in the Melbourne, Deniliquin, and Geelong areas and simply started playing music together. The name King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard derived from a hybrid of two original names they wanted for the group, “Gizzard Gizzard” (Stu Mackenzie) and “Lizard King,” the latter a name another member wanted to call the band to pay homage to The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison and his famous nickname.
Although King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have only been around since 2010, they have released 26 studio albums and have a 27th in the oven and on the way. The band put out five mind-blowing new releases in both 2017 and 2022. What have you done today?

What Musical Genres Do King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Use?
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard may have experimented with as many styles of music as Prince did in his prolific career, and they are taking the experiment and evolution in yet another direction on the upcoming Phantom Island Tour in 2025, where they will be including a conductor and a full orchestra with music director for seven of their concerts on the tour. The other four will be good old-fashioned rock and roll shows.
Genres KGLW have dabbled in include psychedelic rock (like Pink Floyd), garage rock (like AC/DC), krautrock, surf rock, indie rock, psychedelic pop, heavy metal, thrash metal, stoner metal, groove metal, sludge, neo-psychedelia, and synth-prog. The group has also incorporated jazz, blues, and folk music into their work and also had an album of all acoustic music (Paper Mâché Dream Balloon).
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have also used custom-built guitars and other modified instruments to make microtonal music inspired by Middle Eastern music, which can be heard in their 2017 release Flying Microtonal Banana. If you want to see a unique and entertaining group that has used all of the 64 colors in the musical crayon box, KGLW is a must-see concert.
