How To Qualify For The US Open Tennis Tournament?

Let's take a look at some of the specifics of the three different ways to qualify for The US Open for players in the Singles category. Players must be at least 14 years of age, and there is no maximum age limit for prospective players.

Pete Sampras (19 years old, 28 days) was the youngest Men's Singles winner in the US Open in 1990, while William Larned (38 years, 8 months, 3 days) was the oldest Men's Singles winner way back in 1911.

Tracy Austin (16 years, 8 months, 28 days) was the youngest Women's Singles winner in 1979, with Molla Bjurstedt Mallory (42 years, 5 months, 27 days) the oldest Women's Singles winner, a feat she achieved almost a century ago in 1926.

Qualifying by World Ranking

There are 104 players in this prestigious Grand Slam tournament who earn automatic US Open Qualifying by virtue of their world rankings in the sports two respective governing bodies. For the Men, it is the ATP rankings (Association of Tennis Professionals), while for the Women, it's determined by the WTA rankings

2023 US Open winner Novak Djokovic is currently the No. 1 ranked Men's player on the ATP Tour, with Iga Świątek of Poland, the current Women's No. 1 player on the WTA Tour.

Last year, in the 2023 US Open, Alvarez entered the tournament as the top-seeded male player, while Świątek came in as the No. 1 seed in the Women's bracket. Alvarez lost to Russian Daniil Medvedev in the Semifinals, while Świątek was upset by Latvian Jeļena Ostapenko in the fourth round of play in three sets.

US Open Qualifying is theoretically the easiest way to get yourself into the 128 players in the Men's or Women's brackets as it is an automatic process and doesn't involve playing your way in the Qualifying Round or hoping you get selected by a human in for one of Wild Card spots.

Making the Field by the Qualifying Tournament

In the US Open, there are 16 spots in both the men's and women's singles brackets for US Open Qualifying, and these are the first matches to be played at the event. These players aren't ranked high enough in the ATP or WTA to earn automatic US Open Qualifying.

The 16 players who qualify will have won all three of their matches, and their US Open Qualifying Results will see them all advance to the respective Men's and Women's brackets. So, these players essentially will "play themselves in" the 2024 US Open tournament.

There are also 128 players in the US Open Qualifying rounds who are pared down from 128 to 64 (Round 1), 64 to 32 (Round 2), and 32 to 16 (Round 3), and who qualify for the Main Draw after the US Open Qualifying Results.

Last year, Jaume Munar of Spain and Nao Hibino of Japan were the respective Men's and Women's No. 1 seeds in the Qualifying Draw round. Still, both players were abruptly eliminated in straight sets in Round 1 of Qualifying Tournament play. This year, the Qualifying matches will be played from Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22. They will start at 11 am ET, with the gates opening at 10 am ET. The 2024 US Open Qualifying tournament is a part of US Open Fan Week.

One of the nice things about this event is that during US Open Fan Week, fans are given free access to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and the US Open grounds. ESPN will again provide live coverage of the US Open Qualifying Tournament—as well as the entire 2024 US Open—with some live coverage on ESPNews each day of Fan Week, with all of the matches airing on ESPN+.

Qualifying by Wild Card Selection

The last way on How To Qualify For The US Open is to be one of eight players selected by the Wild Card Committee. Prospective Wild Card players in the United States can communicate with individual tournament directors about local wild cards for their respective events.

The eight Men's Wild Card selections in the 2023 US Open were Benjamin Bonzi, Rinky Hijikita, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Alex Michelsen, Michael Mmoh, Ethan Quinn, and Learner Tien. Quinn was awarded a wild card spot in the tournament after capturing the 2023 NCAA Men's Singles National Championship as a then 19-year-old freshman at the University of Georgia.

The eight Women's Wild Card players in the 2023 US Open were Kayla Day, Fiona Ferro, Storm Hunter, Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Clervie Ngounoue, Venus Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki. Williams was a two-time US Open winner (2000, 2001) and made her 24th appearance, while Dane legend Wozniacki was a two-time finalist in the US Open.
