Traditionally seen as the halfway point of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season, MLB All-Star Week allows many players some much needed rest while others are in the spotlight on the diamond participating in the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Monday and in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Preceding the two biggest events on Saturday, MLB All-Star Week at Globe Life Field has three events scheduled on July 13, with the 2024 MLB Futures Game featuring talented young prospects like Washington NationalsOutfielders James Wood and Dylan Crews and San Diego Padres Ethan Salas. You can catch the Futures game on the MLB Network, MLB.tv, MLB.com, and the MLB App (4 EDT/3 CDT/1 PDT).
Also on Saturday, eight of the best prospects will participate in the 2024 MLB Future Skills Showcase, including Chicago Cubs C/1B Moises Ballesteros and Boston Red Sox OF Roman Anthony, with the All-Star Celebrity Softball Game featuring MLB legends and celebrities to follow. Tickets for the Celebrity Softball Game range from $27 to $216.27.
On Sunday, July 14 at the Cowtown Coliseum in the heart of Fort Worth Stockyards, the 2024 MLB Draft (ESPN, 7 EDT/6 CDT/4 PDT) will begin. The MLB Draft will be open to the public and will conclude on Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16.

The 2024 MLB Home Run Derby
The 2024 MLB Home Run Derby will be held on Monday, July 15, at Globe Life Field (Shaw Sports B1K Artificial Turf) in Arlington, Texas—a suburb of Dallas—with eight of the top sluggers from MLB battling to be the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby Champion and with it, a cool $1 million prize for the winner.
Last year on July 10, 2023 at T-Mobile Park, in Seattle Washington—the home of the Seattle Mariners—the 2023 Major League_Baseball Home Run Derby was held with Vladimir Guererro Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays defeating Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays in the finals, 25 to 23 in a contest that saw a record-setting 341 home runs.
Vladimir Guerrero Sr., the father of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., won the 2007 MLB Home Run Derby at AT&T Park—now named Oracle Park—in San Francisco, California. With the win last year, the two became the first father and son to ever win the MLB Home Run Derby.
Dimensions at Globe Life Field are 329 feet down the Left Field Line, 372 feet to the Left Field Power Alley, 407 feet to straight-away Center Field, 374 feet to the Right Field Power Alley, and a short 326 feet down the Right Field Line. With these short distances down the lines and the high Texas temperatures, Globe Life Field is considered one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in MLB.

2024 Home Run Derby: The Contestants
The eight contestants in the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby start off with the guy with the third-most Home Runs in MLB this season (27). Baltimore Orioles young stud SS Gunnar Henderson, a 23-year-old switch-hitter, and his former manager at the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, Buck Britton, will pitch to him.
The second player entered into the 2024 Home Run Derby was Philadelphia Phillies 3B Alec Bohm (11 HRs). The 6-3, 218-pound Bohm has helped lead the Phillies to the best record in MLB heading into the All-Star Break, and the 27-year-old was also named the starting 3B for the National League for Tuesday’s game, his first All-Star Game appearance.
With only 11 homers, Bohm will be a longer shot to win the Home Run Derby, but he has had some success in this type of event, winning the 2016 Coastal Plain League Home Run Derby, and he will have the same pitcher—Scott Wingo—throwing to him in Texas.
Two-time Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso (6-3, 245) will return for a fifth straight year, and the 29-year-old New York Mets 1B has18 HRs this year, but his best Derby days may have passed him by. Right-handed hitter Alonso will try to tie three-time Home Run Derby champion Ken Griffey Jr.
After being named to his first All-Star Game ever, one of MLB’s most exciting young players, Kansas City Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr. (6-1, 200), will also be competing in the Home Run Derby 2024. The 24-year-old Witt—the son of former Texas Rangers P Bobby Witt Sr.—will look to be the first Royals player to win the derby and had some really great numbers when he was chosen, batting .324 (3rd in AL) with 15 HRs and 61 RBI.
Atlanta Braves right-handed DH Marcell Ozuna (6-1, 225) will be the second Braves player to participate in a Home Run Derby (Ronald Acuña Jr.), and the Dominican Republic product had 23 Home Runs when named to this competition, and he will have a good shot at winning this event in the Lone Star State.
Switch-hitting Cleveland Guardians 3B José Ramírez (5-9, 190) will be making his second appearance in the Home Run Derby. Like Ozuna, Ramirez is a native of the Dominican Republic and had 23 HRs and 76 RBI when he was named to the event.
Los Angeles Dodgers OF Teoscar Hernández (19 HRs) and Texas Rangers OF Adolis Garcia (17 HR) were the last two players to round out the field of eight. Both are right-handed hitters, and Hernández will be making his first Home Run Derby appearance, while Garcia will make his second straight appearance and be hitting in his home park.
So, who won’t be in the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby? The current leader in Home Runs in MLB with 32 and 2017 MLB Home Run Derby winner, Aaron Judge and teammate Juan Soto (21) of the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani (28 HRs), and Cincinnati Reds whizkid Elly De La Cruz (16 HRs) have all declined to participate in Arlington on Monday.

New Rules For the 2024 Home Run Derby
There are some new rules for the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby, which will cut down on the total number of swings (and fatigue) and allow contestants to stay in it a little longer than in previous derbies. In recent Home Run Derbies, the eight different seeded contestants would face off in a single elimination round to start the proceedings,
But this year, the eight participants will all hit in the first round, with the top four home run hitters advancing to the second round—the semifinals. If there should be a tie between players at the end of the first round, the longest Home Run will then serve as the tiebreaker.
At that point in the Semifinals, the four remaining sluggers will be seeded 1-4 based on the number of Home Runs hit in the opening round. Seed No. 1 will hit against seed No. 4, and seed No. 2 will face seed No. 3, with the two winners there advancing to the Finals.
If there are ties in the Semifinals or in the Finals, a 60-second Swing-Off will then be held.
There will also be a new Pitch Limit this time around in Arlington. In past Home Run Derbies, pitchers could toss as many balls as possible to batters in the time allowed in the rounds. Now, pitchers will only be allowed to throw a maximum number of pitches in the two- or three-minute timed rounds.
Round 1 and the Semifinals will both last three minutes and will have a maximum of 40 pitches with one Timeout for the hitters and three Bonus Outs. A contestant can earn a fourth Bonus Out by hitting a 425+ foot Home Run in the Bonus Period.
The Finals of the 2024 Home Run Derby will last two minutes and have 27 pitches. The eight participants will be given one 45-second Timeout, but they will not be allowed to use it in any Bonus Periods. The same Bonus Out rules will also apply for the Finals.
So with no single elimination in the opening head-to-head rounds like previous years and the implementation of a maximum number of pitches, we will see the four players who had the most Home Runs in Round 1 all make the Semifinals and less swing-fatigue (and total swings) with these maximum pitch counts.
This should make for a better Home Run Derby, with the sluggers hopefully having more energy to use in the end for the Semifinals and the Finals.
