Unless you have lived in a bunker without windows and access to technology for the last several years, there is a likelihood you are aware that the Dutch sensation known as Martin Garrix has secured his spot as one of the highly sought-after, most-talked-about producers in global entertainment.
Alongside industry stalwarts like Calvin Harris, Avicci, and Tiësto, among others, Garriz has become a recognized voice for the whole global EDM movement. With his first hit, Animals, he has been able to expand his reach and influence, trying to perfect his craft diligently enough to climb up the charts.
At the age of 18 only, he held the number four spot in his region’s top 100 DJs. He yet continues to headline big festivals across the world, the likes of Miami Ultra Music Festival. Now 27 years old, he has made waves in many European countries, allowing him to become the youngest person to hit number one on Beatport.
Technically, Martin Garrix started his musical journey at the age of 8. He was inspired by the performance of Dutch DJ Tiësto at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics. Martin’s passion for the line of craft flourished as he learned how to play guitars, doing so in a treehouse equipped with speakers he got from his supportive father.
Throughout his teenagehood, Garrix committed to becoming overly familiar with master musical instruments and production. In 2013, he got to jump on a dream studio collaboration with his idol, Tiësto, under the auspices of the Music Freedom record label. At 15 years old, he signed with his [own] label, Spinnin’ Records, a Dutch subsidiary of Warner Media Group.
Joining the high-profile label helped him enter the mainstream. His single Animals brought him to the international scene. Besides his Beatport charts feat, Garrix’s work penetrated the global bubble, reaching number one on the United Kingdom’s charts and captivating audiences across the globe.
In addition to his thriving disc jockey career, Martin Garrix created STMPD RCRDS in 2016 after he had some disagreements with his previous record label. The new one helped him platform artists across various genres, reflecting the diversity of his musical interests and zest for entrepreneurship.
Known for his youthful charm and infectious persona, Garrix is also an in-demand ambassador for brands. Since 2015, he has prominently advocated for Tag Heuer, and in 2017, became a brand evangelist for Armani Exchange. His partnerships have stretched to deals with AXE in 2019 and most recently, JBL.
But, for Garrix, it does not stop at music and endorsements. He has ventured into film and literature, leading him to feature in the 2017 Netflix documentary What We Started and authoring the book Martin Garrix Life = Crazy. Beyond that, he holds philanthropy dear, organizing charity shows to support movements like providing top-notch education to vulnerable populations.
In the vortex of his multifaceted engagements, Garrix’s most recent venture saw him put hands on deck with Maejor, forming the electric duo known as Area21. Regardless of the hiatus for sake of the pandemic, the both of them made a big comeback, inadvertently cementing Martin’s status as an one of the most influential figures in the music sector and beyond.
As mentioned before, Garrix was barely 16 years old when Animals took the world by storm. But after the fiasco subsided, he felt intensely pressured to make an even better pop jam. He bested personal barriers to take the stress off before committing to creating something fresh. This, in combination with the untimely death of his friend, DJ Avicii, influenced his talk about mental health.
Avicii and Garrix collaborated to produce the hit track Waiting for Love alongside John Legend. The DJ’s passing formed an introspective period in his life, one in which the party life and staying up all night were deemed mentally detrimental. At some point, he admitted to noticing an increased awareness in the DJ sphere about looking out for one another and taking breaks.
Thanks to making informed, matured decisions, Martin overcame every setback and worked to the best of his capacity. He had two Las Vegas residences in 2019, at clubs Ushuaïa Ibiza and Omnia Las Vegas. DJs like Calvin Harris have worked in these places before. He has also collaborated with Bebe Rexha, Usher, David Guetta, Khalid, and Troye Sivan.
