Mickey Hart is a percussionist who is best known for being one of the two drummers for the rock band Grateful Dead. He manned the drums from 1967 to 1971 and then picked up the sticks again in 1974 and remained until their final concert in 1995. His fellow drummer, Bill Kreutzmann, called themselves the rhythm devils. Michael Steve Hartman was born in Brooklyn, New York, and both of his parents were drummers. Hart was hyperactive and not academically gifted, so he became interested in percussion. From the age of 10, all he did was drum, according to his parents. He dropped out of high school in his senior year, then joined the US Air Force and served as a drummer. Hart joined the Grateful Dead in 1967 and used his exotic drumming to create arrangements for the band. He was inducted (as a member of the Grateful Dead) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
