Alexander O’Connor was still recording songs from his bedroom and finding his sound when he took the internet by storm in 2015 with his independently produced album, Bcos U Will Never b Free. He was 16 when the album was released, and in the years since, he has broken down the four walls of his bedroom and established himself as a star in the industry. Rex Orange County is an uncommon blend of soulful vocals, hip-hop, and introspective lyrics that caught everyone’s attention right from his SoundCloud days.
The release of Rex Orange County’s debut album put him on the radar of key industry players like Tyler, the Creator, who brought him on board in a collaboration for two tracks on his album, Flower Boy. Taking a stronghold of the cards dealt him, O’Connor didn’t show any signs of slowing down. With the subsequent release of singles like Uno, Best Friend, and Sunflower, the breakout star built up a lot of buzz in a rollout that seemed to say: “I’m here now, pay attention.”
In 2017, O’Connor released Apricot Princess, topping the Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and earning himself a solid foothold for his 2019 album, PONY. PONY was a bolder and more differentiated project that established the artist in his own lane, earning him comparisons to other avant-garde stars with experimental sounds like Steve Lacy.
O’Connor’s career is sprinkled with compelling singles like New House, 10/10, and Keep It Up, which came ahead of his 2022 LP project, Who Cares?
Who Cares? features a collaborative track with Tyler, the Creator, symbolizing a full circle moment and highlighting the relationships that the once-upon-a-time bedroom star built over the course of his career.
Rex Orange County has some moves under his belt. After the release of Apricot Princess, O’Connor announced his next album, PONY, and also announced that he was going to be headlining North American and UK tours. He started out a tour in November 2019 and wrapped up in February, 2020 after having visited Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the States.
This tour came after he hit the road in 2018 with Tyler, the Creator visiting different cities and finally ending in Los Angeles for the close of the 2018 tour on August 23.
In addition, the artist has performed at world renowned venues and festivals, one of which was the recent Camp Flog Gnaw Festival which was held in November 2023.
Following up on his flammable success, O’Connor announced a Who Cares? tour in 2022 in promotion of his 4th album project of the same name. However, due to unforeseen personal circumstances, the breakout star had to cancel the tour midway which created turbulence on his otherwise smooth run.
Currently, the artist isn’t scheduled for any upcoming tours or performances in 2024.
