The South Florida Bulls football team, who represent the University of South Florida (USF) located in Tampa Bay, are a bit of an anomaly among Division 1 college football teams, in that they do not hail back to a misty sepia past filled with men in ill-fitting sweaters and no helmets or pads. In fact, the Bulls were founded in the digital camera age, coming together in 1997 with team meetings held under a tree at first (as the school had no football infrastructure at all). The team began in Division 1-AA, the second-highest tier of college football in America, but made the big move to Division 1-A (the highest tier) in 2001. The Bulls have since become known for springing big upsets against some of the top-ranked teams in the nation and have begun to appear in minor Bowl games (chalking up a 7-4 Bowl record so far). Their best season thus far was in 2016, when the team went 11-2, won their first-ever division title, and recorded a victory in the Birmingham Bowl. Another contributor to their quick rise to prominence has been the fact that they are able to use nearby Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their home stadium, which has drawn even more fans to come check out their home games.

South Florida Bulls Rivalries

As a new college football team, the South Florida Bulls have not yet developed deep-seated rivalries or state rivalries with the larger and more established teams in their state. A nascent rivalry has sprung up, however, with the UCF Knights out of the University of Central Florida in Orange County, though the teams now only play each other occasionally.
