Alabama Theatre

Capacity: 2,176

Opened: 1927

The Alabama Theatre, located in downtown Birmingham, is a historical movie palace in the state of Alabama. Once known as the largest theatre in the district, it is also one of the last two standing theatres in the area. Although initially renowned as a movie palace, the theatre is the perfect venue for live music shows and concerts, offering music lovers an intimate listening experience.

In 1934, the department store opposite the theatre was completely destroyed due to a fire accident. The fire affected Parts of the theatre, leaving behind smoke marks. However, it was not until 1998 that the theatre was fully restored and renovated.

Today, the Alabama theatre holds a monumental instrument of cultural heritage, the Wurlitzer Opus 1783 pipe organ. The organ piano, or Big Bertha as it is called, has been in possession of the theatre since its million-dollar construction in 1927. The Orchestra, which plays at the theatre, features many musical instruments, including popular instruments such as the saxophone, the trumpet, the trombone, the violin, and the piano, among others. The Orchestra also showcases the sounds of diverse and unique instruments, like the Chinese Gong, the Diaphonic Diapason, the Oboe Horn, the Lieblich Flute, and the Chrysoglott, among others.

In its beginning stages, the theatre hosted meetings of the regional cohort of the Mickey Mouse Club. Later, it would go on to host splendid beauty pageants. In 1935, the Miss Birmingham Pageant was hosted at the theatre until 1948. The following year, the theatre took up the mantle of hosting the Miss Alabama Pageant. It would continue to do this until 1966. After its full renovation in 1998, the theatre expanded to accommodate ballet shows, live operas, music concerts, Broadway performances, and, most importantly, film productions.
