The DCU Center has gone by many names: The CentrumWorcester’s Centrum Center, and the Centrum in Worcester. Regardless of what name you choose to address it by, the venue caters to all-around entertainment and various events like concerts, sports, family shows, business meetings, and even regional summits.

Owned by the City of Worcester and under the management of the SMG-- a private management firm for public assembly facilities--the center’s naming rights were bought by the Digital Federal Credit Union, the largest credit union headquartered in New England as measured by assets, managing over $9.9 billion.

Following years of building delays, the venue opened as Worcester Center in September 1992 with a capacity of 12,000. In 1989, the arena was expanded to 14,800 seats, with an added 300-level set of balconies. The renovation was completed in 1997, resulting in a name change to Worcester Centrum Center.

On the backs of its description as an architectural gem, the complex added some 50,000 sq ft of exhibition space, 11 meeting rooms, a 12 sq ft ballroom that became the largest in Central Massachusetts, and a modern kitchen area. In October 2006, it got a headquarters accommodation facility, the Hilton Garden, which doubled the number of rooms available at its other hotel, the Crowne Plaza.

Events at the DCU Center

Owned by its NHL affiliate, San Jose Sharks, the Worcester Railers are the primary tenants of the DCU Center. Before this, it was the forte of the Worcester IceCats. For two seasons, it housed the New England Surge of the Continental Indoor Football League. But, after the 2008 season, the team ventured off for greener pastures.

Occasionally, teams in Boston use the venue as a home for their preseason games. Worcester hosts the Boston Celtics every few years, yet their most recent game culminated in tension when it was called off due to the court’s ice-forming condensation. Nevertheless, the center has more or less become ground zero for many events in Worcester, Massachusetts.
