Ever since they relocated from Quebec City to Denver, Colorado and changed their name, the Colorado Avalanche have been a force to be reckoned with in the NHL, as have their legions of loyal white-clad fans. Winning the Stanley Cup in your first season in a city tends to galvanize a fanbase! In the years after their initial decade as one of the best teams in the NHL, trades, injuries, and aging stars inevitably led to a dip in the Avalanche’s fortunes, but the fans never stopped coming and the team has now risen again. Come to a game, grab some merch like shirts, jerseys, or hats from the team shop with their excellent logo on it, and see if the Colorado Avalanche can sweep away the competition. Colorado Avalanche History

The Colorado Avalanche pulled off one of the most impressive – and for Quebec Nordiques fans, cruelest – feats in NHL history in the 1995-96 season, when, in their first year after relocating to Denver from Quebec City, they not only finished first in the regular season (receiving the Presidents’ Trophy) but went on to win the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup, sweeping the Florida Panthers in a one-sided Finals series. This was especially harsh on Nordiques fans due to the many years they had spent battling the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins in one of the toughest divisions in the league, only to lose their team just as they were beginning to build a winner. The 1996 win was also due in no small part to the addition of star goaltender Patrick Roy from the Nordiques’ provincial arch-rivals, the Canadiens. At least the Nordiques probably edged out the new Colorado team in terms of style,  with their baby blue uniforms and iconic logo (to this day, nobody outside Quebec really knows what that logo, or a “Nordique,” actually was). The Avalanche remained one of the best teams in the NHL through the 1990s and into the early 2000s, winning another Stanley Cup remembered as the triumphant swansong of the great Ray Bourque, who finally lifted the Cup after 22 years of trying. The Avalanche later went through a period of rebuilding for a time where they often missed the playoffs, but have recently risen back into prominence, winning their third Stanley Cup in 2022 with a 4-2 series victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche’s devoted fans will be hoping to see their team keep rolling on in the years to come to bring back more championships to the Mile High State.

Colorado Avalanche Rivalries

The Avalanche developed a particularly heated rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings that had been ignited in 1996 in the Western Conference Finals when Avalanche forward Claude Lemieux badly injured the Red Wings’ Kris Draper with one of the dirtiest hits from behind in recent history. When the teams met in 1997, they brought their boxing gloves instead of their hockey sticks, with Lemieux one particular target of Red Wings aggression. Even goalies Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon got in on the action, with Roy racing the length of the ice to tango with his opposite number. All in all, the two teams were to meet five times in the playoffs between 1996 and 2002, with the Avalanche winning on three occasions. The Red Wings won the Stanley Cup three times in that era; the Avalanche twice. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you’re a pacifist) the Red Wings were moved to the Eastern Conference in 2013, meaning that the teams now rarely meet, putting some ice on their once fiery rivalry.

Are Colorado Avalanche basketball games exciting?

Avalanche seemed a strange name for a hockey team in an era when most team nicknames were still plural, though at least it had more to do with winter than the Lightning of Tampa Bay. The name soon seemed quite apt, however, with the way that the Colorado Avalanche swept into the NHL, and the avalanche of support that they received from the hockey-mad fans of Denver. Go check out a Colorado Avalanche game; there’s really no experience like it!
