The Dallas Mavericks entered the NBA in 1980, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets as professional basketball’s representatives in the Lone Star State. After a few seasons on the outside looking in, the Mavs became a consistent playoff presence through the rest of the 1980s, going as far as the Western Conference Finals in 1988 where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Seven. The 1990s was a decade to forget for Mavs fans with their team missing the playoffs in ten straight seasons. Everything changed in 2000 when local businessman (and rabid Mavs fan) Mark Cuban bought the team and brought the Mavs to national attention with his brash personality and over-the-top enthusiasm at games. With the dazzling talents of Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash on show, the Mavs once more became regular playoff contenders, reversing their decade-long slump by qualifying for the postseason in eleven straight seasons. Nash departed in 2004 but Nowitzki soldiered on, joined by guard Dwyane Wade, leading the team to their first NBA Finals appearance in 2006 where they lost 4-2 to the Miami Heat. The Mavs finally won it all in 2011 with the franchise’s first NBA Championship, flipping the script with a 4-2 revenge victory over the Heat with Nowitzki as Finals MVP. Since the year of their triumph, the Dallas Mavericks have frequently struggled to make the playoffs or push beyond the First Round when they do, the sole exception being a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 where they lost 4-1 to the Golden State Warriors. In 2022-23, they missed out on the playoffs completely. Still, with superstar Luka Doncic continuing to dazzle NBA defenses everywhere with his bottomless bag of tricks, Mavs fans are hoping to see their team get back on track in the 2023-24 season.
The rivalry between the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat got cooking when the two teams first clashed in the NBA Finals in 2006, with the Heat’s big unit Shaquille O’Neal, and rising star Dwyane Wade up against power forward Dirk Nowitzki and sharpshooting point guard Jason Terry of the Mavericks. The Mavs had a 2-0 series lead and could have tied Game 3 in the dying seconds with Nowitzki at the free throw line, but he missed and the Heat won four straight to take the series. Dallas got their revenge in the 2011 NBA Finals despite the Heat (with LeBron James) being heavy favorites.
Despite both teams coming from Texas and thus seeming like logical local rivals, it took some time for a rivalry to get going between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs. Hostilities commenced when the Mavs downed the Spurs in the 1980 playoffs, the first of many postseason meetings between the teams, with the Spurs getting the best of the Mavs four times (2001, 2003, 2010, 2014) while the Mavs won in 2006 and 2009. Emotions have run high during these playoff series, with plenty of tough physical play, cheapshots, and several players ejected from games for throwing punches.
