San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs fans experienced some of the best years any sports fan could imagine between 1999 and 2014. Powered by the “Twin Towers,” David Robinson and Tim Duncan, the Spurs not only won their first-ever NBA Championship in 1999 over the New York Knicks, but went on to win four more, with the last coming in 2014 as their aging team powered past the Miami Heat. All this success was overseen by legendary coach Gregg Popovich, who has won more games than any other coach in NBA history. However, in recent years, the Spurs have been truly awful, finishing 22-60 in both of the last two seasons. Still, with the recent addition of eagerly-anticipated rookie Victor Wembanyama to the roster, there is reason for Spurs fans to hope that the future holds some promise of a return to the glories of their past.

Rival Teams

Nothing excites NBA basketball fans more than when their team faces off against one of their biggest rivals. Here are two of the San Antonio Spurs’ most significant rivalries.

San Antonio Spurs vs Los Angeles Lakers

The San Antonio Spursrivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers was one of the most intense rivalries in the history of the NBA between 1999 and 2005, with the Twin Towers (Duncan and Robinson) facing off against double threat Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in the playoffs 5 times in 6 seasons. For seven straight seasons, either the Spurs or Lakers won the Western Conference Finals to end up in the NBA Finals. While nothing may ever top that incredible period in their rivalry, fans of both teams have long memories; there is nothing the Spurs love more than beating the glamorous Lakers! The Spurs will likely play the Lakers 3-4 times in the 2024-25 regular season, with the games split between San Antonio and Los Angeles.

San Antonio Spurs vs Phoenix Suns

The San Antonio Spurs also have a fierce rivalry with the Phoenix Suns of their neighboring state, Arizona, whom they have encountered in the playoffs 10 times, winning 6 of them. There have been incredible moments of heartbreak and elation in those games for Spurs fans, from game-winning shots and 23-point quarters to horrendous hip check on Steve Nash. Recent seasons have seen the Suns be far more successful, though that just makes Spurs fans more eager than ever to beat them! The Spurs will likely play the Suns 4 times in the 2024-25 regular season, with the games split between San Antonio and Phoenix.

When do the 2024-25 NBA Season and Preseason start for the San Antonio Spurs?

The NBA preseason generally tips off in early October. The schedule of preseason games should be released some time in mid- to late August. ****Like all NBA teams, the San Antonio Spurs will play 3-5 preseason games at various locations to prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 NBA regular season. Fans should note that some preseason games take place in non-NBA American markets or even overseas in other countries (for example, two NBA preseason games will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE this year). The NBA regular season starts at the end of October and runs until early April.

Why should you buy tickets to San Antonio Spurs preseason games?

While preseason games do not count towards any team’s point totals in the NBA regular season, don’t completely write them off! Not only are tickets to preseason games much cheaper, but they also allow you a sneak peek at exciting new draft picks and other young players who might be key additions to the lineup of the San Antonio Spurs in the upcoming season. And with tickets at cheaper prices from TicketX, premium seats are also much more affordable, giving you unbeatable views of all your favorite San Antonio Spurs players close up!

2024-25 NBA Season Predictions

Which Teams Will Go To the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs?

There are 20 teams—10 from the Eastern Conference and 10 from the Western Conference—who make the NBA Playoffs. The eight No. 7-10 seeds have to face two do-or-die Play-In games to advance to the final eight in each conference. The 76ers and Heat won that honor in the East in 2024, with the Lakers and Hornets earning that reality in the West.

But with the Western Conference so competitive, Victor Wenbayama, the Spurs, and the Kings improving, and teams like the young Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves on the upswing, the days of seeing the aging Los Angeles LakersLos Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns in the NBA Playoffs may be quickly approaching.

In the East in the 2024-25 NBA season, we can expect the Celtics, 76ers, Knicks, Bucks, Heat, Cavaliers, Magic, and Pacers back in the Postseason, with the Nets, Hawks, and Bulls fighting it out for the final two Play-in spots.

In the West, Anthony Edwards and the TimberwolvesChet Holmgren and the ThunderNikola Jokić and the Nuggets, and Luka Dončić and the Mavericks are bound to make the Playoffs again. As many as eight or nine teams, including the aforementioned Lakers, Clippers, Suns, Kings, Pelicans, Spurs, improving Rockets, and Steph Curry and the Warriors, are fighting for those final six spots.

Which Two Teams Will Go To the 2025 NBA Finals and Why?

There have been five different NBA champions over the last five seasons—the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets—and with the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers meeting in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals and the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2024 Western Conference Finals, it means a guaranteed six different champions in six years.

Who might we see in the 2025 NBA Finals? The Celtics have the best starting five in the Eastern Conference: Kristaps Porziņģis, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday. The C’s will again be the team to beat in the East, especially if Porziņģis can remain injury-free. In the West, it should be a three-team battle between OKC, Minnesota, and Denver, with the new face of the NBA, Edwards, leading his team to the promised land.

2024-25 NBA Finals Prediction: Celtics over Timberwolves, 4-3

Trade Rumors and Draft Picks

With another horrendous season (22-60) behind them, the San Antonio Spurs will be desperate to replenish their roster with free agents, new talent from the draft, and trades with other franchises. Due to their poor finish in 2023-24, the Spurs have been drawn to have the 4th draft pick overall and also have the 8th pick from a previous trade. After getting superstar Victor Wembanyama in 2023, fans are excited to see who the Spurs will select this time, with speculation that two of Nikola Topić, Matas Buzelis, Rob Dillingham, or Reed Sheppard could be heading to San Antonio. The Spurs may look to acquire a few veteran players through trades or free agency, with Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers), Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns), and Brandon Ingram (New Orleans Pelicans) all in the mix as potential trade targets.
