Jackson State Tigers Football

Despite only having joined Division 1 in 1977, the Jackson State Tigers are one of the most successful college football teams among HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), having won an astonishing 19 conference titles along with 4 claimed black college national championships and 3 Bowl games in their history. The Tigers have also produced a high number of NFL players, including four Hall of Famers (Lem Barney, Walter Payton, Robert Brazile, Jackie Slater). The team enjoys passionate support from students, alumni, and the local community, with fans filling the stands in the school colors of navy and light blue to holler out the lyrics of “Cheer Boys” along with their celebrated and fantastically-named marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South. 

Jackson State Tigers Rivalries

Jackson State Tigers have developed rivalries with many of its local rivals, including Alcorn State, the Southern Jaguars, and the Tennessee State Tigers (known as the Southern Heritage Classic, a game which Jackson State sadly no longer plays in).
