Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium Events

Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium has been home to the Jackson State Tigers of Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi since 1967. The stadium actually opened 17 prior to that, however, and for many years also hosted big games for the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs (as well as the Egg Bowl) before those two universities enlarged and refurbished their own stadiums. The SWAC Championship Game is currently held at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium each year to decide the winner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). On the football field, the Tigers have brought plenty of excitement to the stadium over the years, winning an incredible 19 conference titles along with 4 claimed black college national championships and 3 Bowl games despite only having joined Division 1 in 1977. Among HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Jackson State is considered one of the most dominant of all football teams. Aside from college football games (Tigers and championship games) and occasional high school finals, few other events (concerts, etc.) are held at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. There has in fact been talk of demolishing the building if Jackson State decides to replace it with an on-campus stadium. Nonetheless, it is a fantastic venue with great fans that pack the stands in the school colors of navy and light blue and holler out the lyrics of “Cheer Boys” along with their marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South. Hungry visitors to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium will also enjoy themselves, with everything from smoked ribs to pulled pork nachos to locally-inspired gumbo on the menu. For Tigers merchandise, head to any of the numerous kiosks and shops inside Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium or around campus.
