The Phoenix Suns and their devoted fans are still waiting for that elusive first championship after 3 futile trips to the NBA Finals. But those fans keep on going and, as anyone who has been to a Suns game at the Footprint Center before can attest, they keep on raising the roof, helping to make going to a Phoenix Suns game one of the best experiences in the NBA. Don’t miss out on the party—get onto TicketX right now and find yourself some great Phoenix Suns tickets.

Phoenix Suns History

For a team that has made the playoffs 32 times in their history, including three appearances in the Finals, the Phoenix Suns could possibly lay claim to being the best NBA out there to never (yet) win an NBA Championship. Following their humble start in the league, spending most of the years between 1968 and 1975 in the basement looking up at the rest, the Suns leapt straight to the top floor in 1976 when guard Paul Westphal led the team not only to the playoffs but all the way to the NBA Finals, where they fell 4-2 to the Boston Celtics. In the three decades that followed, the Suns became a consistent presence in the playoffs, reaching a second NBA Finals in 1992 that is still remembered as one of the most exciting in the league’s history. In it, MVP Charley Barkley did everything he could to help the Suns prevent Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls from achieving their first “three-peat,” pushing the series to Game Six but ultimately succumbing to the favored Bulls. In 2005 and 2006, point guard Steve Nash, who was once booed by Suns fans when first drafted in 1996 because he had not been well-known as a college player, won consecutive league MVP honors, but the team lost in the Western Conference Finals in both seasons at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks. Following one more Conference Finals appearance in 2010, a 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Suns lapsed into a decade of decline during which they did not make a single playoff appearance. This changed dramatically in 2020-21 when, buoyed by All-Star turns by Devin Booker and Chris Paul, the Suns made a run all the way to their third NBA Finals, which they lost to the Bucks 4-2. While the Suns exited the playoffs in the First Round in 2023 to the Los Angeles Clippers, many pundits are touting them to be top title contenders in 2023-24 with their Big Three of Durant, Booker, and Beal. Phoenix Suns fans will no doubt be asking themselves, at least in the back of their minds, if it just might be fourth-time lucky in 2024.

Phoenix Suns Rivalries

The Phoenix Suns have developed several heated rivalries over the years, particularly in the 1990s and early 2000s when they were top playoff contenders. The Suns’ most intense rivalry is with their neighbors from Texas, the San Antonio Spurs, whom they faced in the playoffs 11 times between 1992 and 2010.  The Suns have won 4 of these series, the last coming as a 4-0 sweep in 2010. Retired Suns star Charles Barkley, now a popular TV commentator, is known for making numerous jokes at San Antonio’s expense. Other Suns’ rivals include the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, and (of course) the Chicago Bulls based on those battles between Michael Jordan and Charles “the Round Mound of Rebound” Barkley

Are Phoenix Suns basketball games exciting?

Everyone who goes to a Phoenix Suns game seems to have a good time except Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who in 2023 claimed that the Footprint Center had the atmosphere of a “South Beach Club” with too much “thumping, techno club music.” Now, while some fans agreed that he might have had a point on that occasion, the fact that the Suns had just beaten the Warriors made his words seem a bit like sour grapes. When Phoenix makes the playoffs, Suns fans go into overdrive, even filling up the Footprint Center for watch parties when the team is playing away.
