As always, Beyoncé outdoes herself with her latest release: The captivating song “Texas Hold ‘em” combines R&B with country music and shows her Black history brilliance. Many believe that country is a purely white genre. Still, the history of the style of music is closely intertwined with the history of African Americans, and with it, racism and cultural appropriation. We can use the banjo as an example: until 1840, the people of the African American diaspora were the only ones who played the banjo. Its origins are in West Africa.

Beyonce x Country

Musically, there was already an approach to the country genre in 2016 on Beyoncé's album Lemonade. In the song “Daddy Lessons,” the artist combines country elements with her unique voice using a banjo. The album delves into personal and societal themes. Its impact goes beyond music, sparking race, empowerment, and infidelity conversations. This project marked a renaissance in her artistry.

The unique singer was born September 4th, 1981, in Houston, Texas – so she has deep roots in the state. Her Texan connections add an authentic touch to “Texas Hold 'Em”, so it's no surprise that her latest work showcases the iconic artist's versatility and creativity. Let's dive into the details of this extraordinary musical journey.

Cowboy Carter

Beyonce’s “act II” has finally arrived as she dropped her latest album, Cowboy Carter on March 29, 2024. Leaving behind her Renaissance era, the hit-maker shifts her focus towards country music in a star studded album that features artists such as country music icon, Dolly Parton, Linda Martell, Willie Nelson, Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

Beyonce’s daughter, Rumi Carter is also featured in the song, “PROTECTOR,” making her the youngest female artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 6. This record was previously held by her sister, Blue Ivy, who first broke the record in 2019 on the song, “Brown Skin Girl.”

Beyonce’s eighth album also feature covers of country classics such as “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, and “Blackbird” by Beatles. A majority of the songs in her album also contain snippets from iconic country tunes and artists, paying homage to her country roots.

“Texas Hold 'Em”: A Country-Pop Gem

“Texas Hold 'Em” debuted on February 10th, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next sonic adventure from Queen Bey. There is no official video yet, but as a small foretaste, these captivating visuals:

Even if you're not a big poker fan, the term “Texas Hold 'em” is well known as a popular variant of the card game. Beyoncé transfers the meaning to her partner and encourages her "boy" to "lay [his] cards down" and "slow dance" with her.

As part of a grander narrative, “Texas Hold 'Em” serves as Act II in Beyoncé's new album. The release date is March 29th. This promises an immersive trip through various genres and themes.
