About Tyler, the Creator
Tyler, the Creator, real name Tyler Gregory Okonma, is an American artist, born 6 March 1991 in Hawthorne, California. The rapper, record producer, director, and fashion designer has contributed massively to the music industry during the 2010s and has been a pioneering figure in the alternative genre of hip-hop.
Early Life and Education
Tyler was born to a Nigerian father of Igbo ancestry (whom he never met) and an American mother of mixed African and white Canadian descent; he grew up in Hawthorne before moving to Ladera Heights at 17. His love of music began in his early years, when he was drawing up imaginary album covers by seven and then teaching himself to play the piano at the age of 14.
Throughout his education, Tyler attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas over 12 years. Traditionally, his hyperactive nature clashed with any educational setting, causing his removal from a drama class in eighth grade and his disbarment from taking the band class simply because he couldn’t read music in ninth grade.
Career Beginnings and Odd Future
Tyler co-founded the alternative hip-hop group Odd Future in 2007 with Hodgy, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies. The group self-released their debut mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, in November 2008. Fast forward to now, and Odd Future had quickly gotten this sort of cult following, and Tyler was the leader and the most prominent member.
The other members of Odd Future are:
Earl Sweatshirt
Domo Genesis
Mike G
Syd tha Kyd
Matt Martians
Jasper Dolphin
Taco Bennett
Solo Career and Achievements
Tyler's solo career skyrocketed following the release of his debut mixtape, Bastard, on December 25, 2009. His breakthrough came with the release of the music video for "Yonkers" in 2011, which garnered significant attention and earned him the Best New Artist award at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
Some of Tyler's notable achievements include:
Grammy Awards: Won Best Rap Album for IGOR (2020) and Call Me If You Get Lost (2022)
Brit Award: He won the International Male Solo Artist (2020) award
MTV Video Music Award: Won Best New Artist for "Yonkers" (2011)
Billboard 200: Reached #1 with IGOR (2019)
Discography
Tyler, the Creator's discography includes:
Bastard (mixtape, 2009)
Goblin (2011)
Wolf (2013)
Cherry Bomb (2015)
Flower Boy (2017)
IGOR (2019)
Call Me If You Get Lost (2021)
As for most of his career, Tyler has worked with several artists and produced for members of Odd Future. While he has definitely changed his musical style quite a bit — from his early controversial, explicit work to his more recent mature introspective later albums — he has continued with a trend of high quality throughout his career.
Beyond music
Beyond music, Tyler has ventured into television with shows like Loiter Squad (2012-2014) and Nuts + Bolts (2017). He has also made forays into fashion design and has written and produced music for children's content, including the theme song for Bill Nye Saves the World and the soundtrack for the animated film "The Grinch" (2018). Most recently, he has joined the cast of the “Marty Supreme” movie.
Tyler the Creator Mugshot
Tyler, The Creator was once arrested in 2014 for inciting a riot at SXSW festival. The reason why it got famous was for his goofy face smiling in the camera with his pink shirt on. His iconic mugshot is still regarded as one of his key moments.
